palmOne Zire 73 is just a fantasy

Brighthand's Ed Hardy is running the story this morning that despite all recent rumors, palmOne is not planning to release a palmOne Zire 73 device. But fear not, according to Ed, palmOne has something much better up its sleeve:

palmOne's next consumer-oriented handheld is going to be the LifeDrive, a model that bears almost no resemblance to its predecessors. This device will get really serious about multimedia. It will include a large screen, a 4 GB microdrive, and multiple kinds of wireless networking. The Zire 72 can play audio and video that has been converted on a PC and them moved onto the device. Please forgive me for using a cliche, but that's so 1990s. The LifeDrive will be able to play audio and video streamed directly from a web site, without users having to go to the hassle of converting it to a new format.

You can read more about his LifeDrive praise here. With all the joy let's not forget that Pocket PCs have been able to play native audio and video files for quite some time - even streamed from the Web or a shared network drive.

Nice story. It will be interesting to see how Palm sells it and positions it for future models. And I wonder if the market is ready for such a high priced model (but I'm very glad to see it). I just wish they had a partner model with clamshell design. Hopefully the corporate business will boom with it, but that might have to wait for the Linux core.

I've seen info on the lifedrive on other sites as well. It looks like a really good product and being from Palmone a suspect it is. By the way that should be 4 GB not 4 MB of memory. 4megs wouldn't do a whole lot of good and would be a waste of a good microdrive.

I guess now we can start to see threads like "Where can I get a case for my LifeDrive?" or "What cases do you recommend for my LifeDrive?"

It's never too early for some people.

The Zire73 is probably in development and should arrive this fall. That's my guess. Right now, they have the Lifedrive. Releasing two products which might have overlapping audience only lessen the sales of one or the other so releasing the Lifedrive and Zire73 together doesn't make good business sense.
