I Caved!!

My daughter dragged me to Barnes and Noble today. Its been so long since I've entered a 'paper book' store.

Oh, my. The colors, the colors! The smells! Big books, little books, hardbacks, paperbacks, pop-ups!

They had "The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"...all 5 books in one for only $20. Yeah, i know I could have bought it cheaper at Amazon, but I grabbed it anyway.

'Sigh. "Hi, my name is desertgrandma, and I'm a recovering paperbook reader.............."

It looks like it'll be available as an ebook shortly. Sadly at the paperback price.

http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/d...=9780307498465

Still, considering it's five books in one, $20 isn't too dreadful.

Aw, jeez, that means Amazon will have it for the Kindle, too. I've been waiting forever for it, finally gave up!

Well, I guess I'll just have to wait a bit more.......thanks for the info.

I just posted in the "What are we reading" thread that I was stuck reading paper books to catch up with my swap and bookring obligations. One advantage of participating in these activities is that I rarely have to buy a paper book. Instead, I swap some that I have for those I don't -- then turn around and swap the ones I've received for some others. But, I'm getting behind, so I've had my nose stuck in books with pages instead of books with screens for most of this month. And, when you consider that I downloaded all the free books at Amazon.com and purchased the Jerry Pournelle bundle from Baen and bought three multiformat titles at Fictionwise, I have 'way too many books on hand to read.

Troglodyte!

(I'm one to talk: I've still got a bunch of p-books as well as e-books on the go. I blame the Edinburgh Book Festival. Still, almost finished the Ken Macleod's The Night Sessions [sniff; really enjoying it!], and I think I'll move onto one of the waiting discworlds...)

Troglodyte? TROGLODYTE?????

If I knew what that was, I"m sure I'd be highly offended................

No really, I do what what it is. Its the stuff Superman was allergic to, but I don't know what that has to do with anything.....

It's an underground movement. Haven't you seen the excellent French film Delicatessen?

Anyway, I just like the sound of it, and I'm not one to let the meaning of a word stop me mis-using it.

I guessed you knew, but wasn't sure if you'd get the obscure reference to the film and its resistance movement against the new order (or if other people would).

I also knew someone who liked spending his free time crawling into small caves deep underground -- a caver. He frequently referred to himself as a troglodyte.

I never saw the film, so that reference went over my head. As most jokes do.

I'm used to referring to those who like to explore caves as a 'spelunker', so that also went over my head!

But I did manage to get 'troglodyte' on the 'other' thread....

When I were a nipper, many moons since gone, I remember a sign on the outside door of a cafe....

"Absolutely NO troglodytes"....
