Font Size Discrepancies

Some of you hard-core users who keep track of firmware updates and their minutia will probably be familiar with this problem.

I’ve noticed since last year or so that font sizes vary from book the book. It can be a real nuisance when one book has an extremely small default font which I enlarge, then I open another new book which suddenly has gigantic fonts. Likewise, when one book has a large font size setting, which I reduce, this can produce teeny tiny text for another newly opened book. Is there a setting that I’m not seeing to prevent this behavior? I admit I’ve been away and this has likely been discussed, but I couldn’t find it in my search.

I have this problem on my Elipsa and Clara, but not my iOS Kobo apps.

Unless you are comparing epub and kepubs and their known font sizing differences, then it is the books themselves. Apart from editing the books, there is nothing you can do about this. Kobo does a fair job of respecting the book formatting. The settings Kobo uses are relative values, not absolutes.

Font Size Discrepancies

I hadn’t considered the possibility that I was seeing different behavior with epub vs kepub. It’s in the kepubs that I’m noticing the skyscraper tall font size settings.

You’re right. It’s Kobo’s relative settings that is causing the issue. I do recall others discussing it, but I don’t recall any solutions. Apparently, there are none.

Fortunately, once I edit the size, Kobo keeps that size for the remainder of my reading. What has changed that has caused the discrepancy in font sizing between the formats? And what problem did the change solve? I can’t say that I’m a fan of this relative sizing. I switch between purchased and sideloaded ebooks often.

I've run into this problem myself. If you're using mixed kepubs and epubs, there's a kobopatch to make the font size consistent.

Otherwise, it's really up to the book CSS. One option is to edit the ebook and sideload it. What I do is use Kobo Utilities to set the font size ahead of time. It doesn't actually solve the issue, but it does prevent the fonts from carrying over between books.

Nothing has changed. It has always been a difference between the epub and kepub renderers. And swapping between purchased kepubs and sideloaded epubs will show it. If you sideload as kepub, there should be no difference except for what is actually in the books. And there is a patch that adjusts one of the sizes.

As the previous posters said, there's not only one, but several solutions. I have the exact same font size in all my ebooks on both of my Kobos.

What I do:
  1. Edit the book css and sideload everything. No direct downloads
  2. Use the patch to unify the kepub/epub sizes. The alternative to this is to sideload everything as kepubs or epubs only, without mixing different formats.

Even if you have applied the patch to standardize the font sizes between ePub & KePub, some eBooks have a different base font size and some sort of line height. The only way to be sure you'll be getting the same font size and line height is to edit the CSS and sometimes the HTML.

I do edit the CSS/HTML because a lot of eBooks are poorly formatted and font size/line hight can be just some of the things that I feel need fixing.

That is strange. I don't remember such drastic font size discrepancies in years past. It's not that I don't believe you. I just don't recall it. Perhaps the books I've been reading have at fault.

I probably won't do this, though I'm glad you told me about it just in case I need to pursue such a solution in the future. I tend to be lazy and just sync with the cloud. However, I am going to looking that patch.

I like to sync and go with my eBooks, so the patch may be the solution I'm looking for, even if it isn't perfect.. With so many of you suggesting editing CSS/HTML, there must be some benefits to it. I think I'll save that for a day when I'm in the mood to experiment.

I have to do some checking, but, I might have missed something. How much of a difference there was did depend on the device. I think on the larger devices, it wasn't as noticeable as on the smaller devices. The screen resolution could also have an affect. But, just looking at my Aura ONE now, I am seeing more of a difference than I remember. It might be that this changed and the difference is consistent across the devices. There was a change a few firmware versions ago with the DPI used for epubs. It changed from a hardcoded value to something matching the devices DPI. That might explain the differences in our memories.

Maybe the newly release 4.33 will fix the font issue reported in this thread.

I see a huge difference for the SAME book css sideloaded in kepub and epub formats between kepub and epub font sizes on Sage N778.

I only use epub on H2O and Libra (both original types), so I only saw this since I got a Sage. I use the Elipsa mostly for PDFs.

There is a patch to make ePub & KePub use the same font scale. It's not a Sage issue. It's the way it's always been until the patch came put to fix this.
