The original source quoted in the XDA article was this article from Good E-Reader: https://goodereader.com/blog/kindle/...b-in-late-2022.

Is Good E-Reader a reliable source?

Good E-Reader has updated their article:

Update: It looks like Amazon is converting the uploaded EPUB to KF8 (AZW3). So, it looks like they might not support EPUB natively.

It looks like both Good E-Reader and I jumped the gun on this one. Can a mod update the title of my original post?

I had to clean my keyboard after reading your question. Bad cat!

Good e-Reader is known for plagiarizing from multiple sites including MobileRead and for concentrating on click-bait rather than accuracy. Unaffectionately referred to as Bad E-Reader by quite a few people. You might want to check this item on Nate Hoffelder's The Digital Reader blog: https://the-digital-reader.com/2018/...er-fact-check/.

I seem to recall hearing something about this in the past. I posted because the article was on XDA. I didn't realize their source was Bad E-Reader until later.

I remember when that site was up to considerably worse than just plagiarizing news and dealing in sketchy *facts* ... they certainly earned their Bad E-Reader name early!

I try to avoid reading or watching anything they post just on general principle.

Guess you could say I'm also in agreement.

It’s arguably one of the few things that the majority of the forum agrees about.

Amazon sent out email last night. It contained a pointer to the following page on the Amazon site:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/help/cus...4490_626412530

---------------
Dear Kindle Customer,

Thank you for using the Send to Kindle service to send personal documents to your Kindle library. We wanted to let you know that starting August 2022, you’ll no longer be able to send MOBI (.mobi, .azw) files to your library. Any MOBI files already in your Kindle library will not be affected by this change.

MOBI is an older file format and won’t support the newest Kindle features for documents. Any existing MOBI files you want to read with our most up-to-date features for documents will need to be re-sent in a compatible file format.

Also, compatible formats now include EPUB (.epub), which you can send to your library using your Send to Kindle email address. We’ll also be adding EPUB support to the free Kindle app for iOS and Android devices and the Send to Kindle desktop app for PC and Mac.

If you have any questions, please visit our help page or contact our Customer Service team.

Regards,
The Kindle Team

The information is accurate, according to Amazon. What I don't think people have realized is that after August, your MOBI format books will not be usable on Kindle unless they have already been uploaded to your personal documents. There will be no way to upload MOBI books, starting in August 2022. Neither Send to Kindle nor emailing them to your Kindle email address will work.

This has dire implications for everyone who has older ebooks in the MOBI format. These books should still be accessible through Calibre if they do not have DRM, thank goodness, but unless you upload them to your Kindle Docs account before August 2022 they will not be usable on Kindle. Amazon has no plans to provide any sort of conversion process. You're just going to lose those books.

I don't know what the new format is - the Amazon tech reps I spoke to either could not or would not say.

This also has implications for authors using the KDP platform to publish their books. I see a lot of self-published books as an editor, and many of them are in the MOBI format. Please alert anyone you know who uses Kindle Direct Publishing to stop publishing in the MOBI format and switch to the newest format supported by KDP.

I spent several frustrating hours with Amazon tech support, trying to find a workaround. They are not planning to provide one, at least not at this time. So go through your files and upload any MOBI books you've gotten from authors, BookFunnel, and other free book sites. Upload those books now using Send to Kindle. As long as they are in your Kindle library, you will still be able to access them after August 2022. There is no limit on the number of books you can upload, again according to Amazon tech support.

And to the Calibre development team: Thank you for providing this e-reader platform! This gives you an opportunity to gain a lot of new customers, if you publicize the fact that the Calibre reader will still allow you to read your MOBI books, provided they do not have DRM.

" Please alert anyone you know who uses Kindle Direct Publishing to stop publishing in the MOBI format and switch to the newest format supported by KDP."

That was turned off ages ago.

Any BOUGHT books will still be able to be downloaded on newer kindles. You thus do NOT need to send mobi books to Amazon as they will not be Kindle books if not already in your Amazon account. Mobi books from other sources can be converted.

No-one actually needs to ever use Send to Kindle.

No. MOBI format books will still be usable on Kindle devices after August if you sideload via USB. Amazon has given no indication of that ability going away. The main disadvantage of USB sideloading is that you lose syncing of reading position and annotations with your Amazon account and between Kindle apps/devices.

Or you can convert them to EPUB using calibre.

Again not true.

The new format Amazon is accepting is EPUB. You can email EPUBs to your account now and in August it will be supported using the send-to-kindle apps.

Calibre can be easily configured to convert other formats to EPUB when sending via email.

As Quoth wrote, this is old news for publishers. Amazon stopped accepting MOBI format from them on August 1 of last year.
