POLL: what % of your books did you put on your Kobo yourself?

On your device, roughly what % of books did you put on it yourself, rather than
- getting them from the Kobo store (purchased or free)
- borrowing them from a library such as via Overdrive?

I.E Books you got from other sources and put on the device by
- plugging it into your computer using a USB cable
- using Calibre (using the USB cable or wirelessly)
- or some other method.
_______________________________

I include in this percentage books you got from sites like Project Gutenberg (via OPDS download or otherwise).

All my books on all my ereaders (Kindle, Nook, Kobo) are sideloaded via Calibre. Even those bought from Kobo or Amazon. I download nothing directly from the store. The main reason for this is that I edit all my books (metadata and formatting).

I don't use libraries.

Does this mean they are still treated by the devices as kobo-purchased (Kepubs?) - i.e would they still retain the various data services that only kobo-bought books retain?

For example, if you log out of your Kobo, all of your 'own' books that were in collections, will no longer be in collections. But those you bought from Kobo WILL be.

What would your kobo-bought but still sideloaded books do?

Frankly I have no idea. I've never logged out of my Kobo account in the two years I've had the Libra. And I've never logged out of my Kindle account in the 10 years I've used Kindles (except when I sold a Kindle I no longer used). I did sign out of my B&N account on my Nook once, which reset the Nook to the factory settings, i.e. deleted all books on the device (that's what I expected it to do after some googling. I wanted to reload everything from scratch).

I use Calibre to "shelve" my books automatically on the Kobo, so losing collections would not be that much of an issue for me.

Edit: I suspect that my Kobo-bought sideloaded books would be treated as sideloaded. But I cannot vouch for it, having never tried to log out.

Good lord you really don’t listen do you.

Any Kobo purchased books which are stripped of DRM (something anyone here who side loads them does) are treated as side loaded books.

And I’m fairly sure I mentioned this, and I’m confident any forum regular will agree, mobile reads members are not indicative of the general ereadering population. We’re a small niche of an already niche group.

Since you claim to love logic so much here’s some evidence. If companies such as Amazon, Kobo, or B&N found they made just as much money from content sales by allowing other storefronts directly on their devices why wouldn’t they charge those companies a small fee to sell on their devices.

Here’s the thing most consumers take the path of least resistance. Give them a device with a single storefront built in and that’s the one they’ll use. It’s when you give them options that you as a company start to lose sales. And please save any anti consumer complaints, if you think you have a case contact a lawyer and get them to file a class action lawsuit (you’ll easily meet the number of afflicted people as it’s everyone with an eink Nook, Kindle, or Kobo at the least). And should you do that please let us know the lawyers reaction. I’d ask for the judges reaction but I’d be surprised if even the most crackpot lawyer would take such a case.

I'd just like to know how many people put their own books on.
Thanks.

Almost 100% of my ebooks are put there by me. I think there was a user guide.
I've bought books from four places OTHER than Kobo. I've never bought a book from Kobo, but if I did I'd be putting it on the ereader.
I've downloaded to PC any books I've bought from Amazon, but if I used their direct transfer it would still be me.

My Grandchildren have most of their ebooks put on by me and wife has all of her ebooks on her laptop and our server. I've sourced most of the PD ones and use Calibre for her as she can't be bothered, despite using computers for years and teaching me programming.

I think your question is poorly formulated and the actual poll is missing. Sorry!

I've never heard of an ebook supplier put other than a user guide and dictionaries without the ereader owner deciding to put a book or magazine on!
