How does Kobo calculate percent of book read?
While reading a kepub fanfic (total 1660 pages), this happened:

Pages 1185-1211 (Chapter 44): 70% read
Page 1212 (Chapter 44) 71% read
Page 1213 (Chapter 45): 72% read

did 71% only last one page because of the chapter break?

Kobo's reading-related stats are calculated via a formula that's very arcane, but I'm going to post it here anyway

“Fillet of a fenny snake, In the cauldron boil and bake; Eye of newt and toe of frog, Wool of bat and tongue of dog, Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting, Lizard's leg and owlet's wing, For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.”

I think so. There are several numbers stored in the database for kepubs that are used for calculating how far through the book you are. Some are calculated when the book is imported, others when the book is first opened. One of the numbers is the percent read at the start of the file and another is how many percent that file covers. Chapter 44 probably has 71% for the starting point and 0% for the size.

How those numbers are calculated, I'm not sure. I think it is just file size. Though I am not sure if it is compressed or uncompressed sizes.

So, @Uncle Robin got it pretty much right.

Could you send me a copy of the book? It looks like it is big enough with enough chapters to check some of this properly.

Here is a copy — hopefully copyright shouldn't be a concern seeing as it's a fanfic. I used KoboTouchExtended to put it on the Kobo. The strangeness occurs at the end of chapter 44.

I've often been puzzled by this. On occasions I can be clearly over half way through the book on page count, however measured in terms of including or excluding material at the front and back of the book that is not part of the main text, but still be, for example on 41%.
