subfolders in Calibre?

I understand that Calibre does much of its organization via tags. That said, I'd rather not use tags; can I somehow – i.e., via a plugin or other functionality – simply make more subfolders in the sidebar and sort my books that way? This way I could keep a single library and just break them up by whatever kind of category I'd like, ala other apps that have the same general look/feel as Calibre (i.e., itunes, etc).

Is this even possible? I can't seem to be able to figure it out, although it looks like it should be.

There are many ways to get what you are looking for. Each approach has benefits and costs that can only be calculated by you, personally, based on what you want and your unique value system. Some people are willing to spend an enormous amount of effort to achieve exactly what they want; others, not so much.

I recommend you look at 'Virtual Libraries' and then 'User Categories' to start with. They are explained in the user manual at https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/gui.html .

Create a disposable test library and try different options until you find a combination that works for you personally.

You can create hierarchical tags, that are nested in the tag browser like file subfolders, using this techinque: https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/sub_groups.html

This sounds like exactly what I need! I've read the manual, but is there a way for each virtual library to show up in the sidebar? Then i can hide all the other stuff in the sidebar and just have each of those there, and I can easily sort into them by dragging books into one or the other.

I should note that I figured out how to open the virtual libraries as tabs across the top, but you can't drag/drop into them. Is there another technique that uses the library/playlist or subfolder technique, as in the Amazon, Apple, Windows music/graphic/ebook/digital asset management apps? Or is that outside of what Calibre does?

OK, so I think I'll give up on Virtual Libraries. Looks good, but doesn't do what I need really. Maybe I should just give in and use tags.

Alternatively, does anyone know of a plugin that uses the regular old Mac/Windows playlist/organization model for organizing a single library in the sidebar? There seem to be a jillion plugins, I guess I should start exploring them.

I previously suggested User Categories, but you have not mentioned them.

@moehong - if you want arbitrary sets there's the Reading List optional plugin, see Index of plugins. But AFAIK there's no drag drop into them.

I drive them (add, delete, view, edit etc) from the book list context menu, and a couple of keyboard shortcuts for frequently used actions.
