My book ratings reset on the device?

On my Kobo books I rate them at the end of the book. I think most of them may not have a rating any longer, it seems to be the older books. I usually look at the ratings that I have given a book to see if I will buy the next in series or from the same author etc.

Would anyone know if this is normal?


I have done a factory reset and account repair in the past (no idea how long ago though). I also use Calibre with Kobotouchextended and Koboutilities for non Kobo books.

No, I don't think the ratings are synced. I rate them when I am finished as well. I just checked the last book I finished on one of my other devices, and the rating hasn't synced to it. The reading status has but the rating hasn't. Because of that, I would not expect the rating to restored after a factory reset.

It is possible that if you review the book, the status will be saved. I never do that, so I don't know.

If you are a calibre user, my Kobo Utilities plugin can fetch the reading status and rating from the books on the device to the library. This can also be restored to the device if needed. I don't normally restore this for purchased books as it will sync, but, restoring the rating should work.

With using the Kobo Utilities plugin do the books need to be backed up in Calibre?

Calibre will work with the books in its library and then match these to the books on the device. Then, a lot of the functions the Kobo Utilities plugin supplies works on these books. For example, when you fetch the reading status from the device, it only fetches it for books that are in the calibre library and adds the fetched information to the books metadata. The book in the library can be an "empty" book. That is basically just the book record without the actual file for the book.

I am 50% there, the earliest book rating was 16mths ago and the earliest book read date is 2015. So Kobo's stored data seems accurate.

Did have a play around and noticed that a lot of the books do not show up as "On Device" in Calibre. I did the match library option in calibre and this works, but then I would have to manually do this for every other book. For most it seems the title is incorrect.

Also tested an empty book in Calibre as you allured to with just the title and author which worked for that particularly book.

Did a bit of a search and I think this cant be done but do you know of a way to be able to download the Kobo metedata and not what is in the epub file to calibre?

I was thinking this may bypass the issue of the incorrect title's etc. for what I am trying to do...?
