Frustrated with failure to view .kfx conversions

Admittedly, I am late to the .kfx party and am scrambling to catch up. With Calibre v3.9, KFX output plugin v1.12.0 and Kindle Previewer v3.15 I have successfully converted a few epubs but attempts to view them fail with "Unsupported file extension: .kfx." I've read the FAQ's, Wiki, searched the forum threads here, as well as Google and blogs. Everything discusses the conversion but not the viewing.

I saw one small reference in an older thread that advised renaming the .kfx file to .azw8, which did not work (at least for me). For now, I'm sticking to azw3.

Might someone kindly point me to a source where I can learn what I need to do in order to view the converted .kfx files in Calibre?

In order to view a format, you need the corresponding input plugin. i.e. in this case the KFX input plugin. But really, there is absolutely no point converting to KFX if you want to view the book in calibre. KFX is, in every way, an inferior format to azw3. Its only use is to enable a few features on kindle devices that amazon is using to try to shore up their walled garden.
