Billed Again
I have my Kindle tied to my prime account. I went from the home screen, on the Kindle, to "My Library" and selected a book already in my library to reread. It turns out that the publisher had republished the book and issued a new ASIN (?) and so Amazon charged me again for the book?
Has anyone else experienced this? It happened without warning on the Kindle and I feel it is very deceptive. |

Customer service will fix that right up for you, if you really do have a charge on your account. I'd guess you won't see one.

Never had that happen. Makes no sense if you went into your existing library and not the store. I have plenty of books where either the publisher changed or the same publisher has republished under a new ASIN and while I of course don't have access to that new version (unless I buy it) I still have access to the previous version that I had purchased. I don't understand how the new version which you've not purchased would even be able to show up in your existing library, makes no sense.
Have you contacted Amazon? |

The reason I found it was it appeared in my account at my bank's website. I saw it. And they supposedly fixed/are fixing it. It just disturbs me that they do this without giving you a choice, on the kindle screen, to read the old version or the new version. And now I have to watch for it every time.

Maybe it's a bug in some new software update. It's the first time it's happened to me also. It's actually my wife's kindle but I watch my bank account regularly. Equafax said my data was potentially compromised in their recent 145mil data breach so I watch everything closely now.

Sign onto your account page at each of the financial institutions you deal with and check for that possibility. Let their computer system help you watch on a daily basis rather than just once a month. An extra set of "electronic eyes" can't hurt. (*) My guess is because they don't want to upset the companies that charge for such a service. Last edited by knc1; 10-17-2017 at 04:09 PM. |

I had a problem with Amazon.com/mx where I was billed inappropriately but stupid me, I didn't go to a forum of customers to complain. No, I contacted Amazon customer service by chat, so I'd have a printable record, and in about five minutes it was all resolved. Amazon customer service followed up with an email for my records.
I should have gone and complained to a bunch of other Kindle customers who couldn't do squat. Makes a lot more sense. |

Nice snark patrickt. However, you're not as smart as you think you are. I already did that and got the charge reversed. I was looking to see if the problem was more widespread.

It is nice to see you are smarter than most first post complainers. That happens more often than not. That was why you got advice and snark. Oh and yes, different ASIN is considered a different book for future reference. As you found out, a simple call gets your money back. Also, that is on the publisher, not Amazon. It generally means the publisher pulled the old version and uploaded a new one. Or in the case of public domain, there could be as many as fifty different versions of the exact same book just with different publishers. (If not more.) Now totally off topic, Awesome car. |

Interesting discussion then.. If this indeed 'does happen', as presented in this thread, then no, it's not on the publisher, it's indicative of a severe flaw in the Amazon System. It's not enough to just 'report to customer service for a refund.'... negative billing is generally outright illegal in most jurisdictions (that I'm aware of) with consumer protection laws.

I just tried it with A Dance of Cloaks (Shadowdance Trilogy, Book 1) By David Dalglish. When I bought the book, it was self published. Shortly afterwards, the author signed with a publishing company, who required him to pull all of the previous books in the series, and then they re-published them. The book downloaded fine to my Voyage...I'll keep checking to see if a charge appears on my card, and update this post if it does. Shari |
