William Henry Giles Kingston (1814 - 1880) was a popular English novelist who wrote over 130 books over 30 years. These were primarily adventure books and many of them were set at sea. The son of a wine merchant, Kingston had spent much of his early life in Portugal and fell in love with seafaring.

Hurricane Hurry, first published in 1873, is meant to be based on the journal of a Royal Naval officer participating in the American war of Independence including the surrender of Cornwallis.
