Free (nook/Kindle/ePub) Methuselah Project [Xtian SFnal Captain America Expy Novel]
The Methuselah Project: A Novel by Rick Barry is his inspirational WWII-to-present-day-hopping thriller-ish take on the concept of Marvel Comics' popular superhero Captain America (616 Steve Rogers version, obviously, Wikipedia), starring a young WWII flying ace who ends up as a POW experimented upon by Nazis, which inadvertently endows him with peak-human abilities and delayed aging and apparently gets locked away for a time, and winds up having coping difficulties with the modern world when he finally escapes (I admit to being mildly impressed by any sort of secret POW prisoner-keeping organization that can survive 70+ years of fairly significant national political upheaval and bureaucratic budget cuts and generational staff atrophy, even if it is run by mad scientist supervillains with their own sources of funding and henchpersons who probably all moved to Argentina) and there's some sort of obligatory conspiracy after him which leaves him confused as to whom he can trust the obligatory love interest, as there always seems to be in these stories, free courtesy of Christian publisher Kregel.
Currently free, probably just for one day @ B&N (also UK), Amazon (available to Canadians and these normally also go free in the UK but apparently not this time, but linkage provided in case you want to Report A Lower Price or whatever), and Google Play (available to Canadians). And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Pretty much by default, but frankly, this one also got bonus points for having sfnal/superheroic content and looking like an interestingly cracktastic ceci n'est pas Captain America story. ![]() Enjoy! And happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians, and happy holiday for the neighbours to the south who also seem to be celebrating something-or-other today. Description In World War II, German scientists began many experiments. One never ended. Roger Greene is a war hero. Raised in an orphanage, the only birthright he knows is the feeling that he was born to fly. Flying against the Axis Powers in World War II is everything he always dreamed--until the day he's shot down and lands in the hands of the enemy. When Allied bombs destroy both his prison and the mad genius experimenting on POWs, Roger survives. Within hours, his wounds miraculously heal, thanks to those experiments. The Methuselah Project is a success--but this ace is still not free. Seventy years later, Roger hasn't aged a day, but he has nearly gone insane. This isn't Captain America--just a lousy existence only made passable by a newfound faith. The Bible provides the only reliable anchor for Roger's sanity and his soul. When he finally escapes, there's no angelic promise or personal prophecy of deliverance, just confusion. It's 2015--and the world has become an unrecognizable place. Katherine Mueller--crack shot, genius, and real Southern Belle--offers to help him find his way home. Can he convince her of the truth of his crazy story? Can he continue to trust her when he finds out she works for the very organization he's trying to flee? Thrown right into pulse-pounding action from the first page, readers will find themselves transported back in time to a believable, full-colored past, and then catapulted into the present once more. The historical back-and-forth adds a constantly moving element of suspense to keep readers on the edge of their seats. |
