Fast question about second hand PW
Hello. I have an opportunity to buy a very cheap PW2 in a second hand shop.
Of course, I won't have a way to know who registered the device neither access to the amazon account. I am actually a happy user of a K4 with Duokan (great for epub), then I live without connection to internet neither account issues. I simply use Calibre to sync my books, all of them downloaded from different places of internet (not bought at amazon). What will happen if I buy this PW2? Will be possible simply to copy through USB all my books collection to the device (with some conversions to mobi, because the lack of epub) and just read them? Or is there any thing I am missing? Thank you very much :-) Regard. edit: Sorry. Wrong section. I tried to move to other forum but I can't :-/ Last edited by kokoliso; 07-23-2015 at 05:48 AM. Reason: wrong section |

You can convert to .mobi via Calibre and side-load the books. Not sure how well the kindle will handle collections of side-loaded books (I don't own a Kindle).
If you want to continue using epub, check the FW and DONT turn wifi on. If it is 5.6.x, you will not be able to install any kind of hacks as you have done on your existing Kindle. If it is lower than 5.6.x, keep wifi OFF and install jailbreak (read these forums carefully). |

You can't use collections unless you register the kindle to an Amazon account. I'm not sure if this is different for a jail broken device but it is a fact for non jail broken.

I won't be able to register at amazon. - What it means that I cannot use collections? - What are collections? - Sorry but in which is different to the K4 I own with its original firmware? - What will happen when I will transfer a book through usb to the device? Thank you very much for your answers. I hope that will be available still in the shop. But I don't want to buy an useless device. |

Another question.
If I buy a second hand kindle. Could I unregister it and register it to my amazon account? Or are them locked to the account of the guy who bought the kindle? Thanks :-) |

Why can you not register it, as a matter of interest?

If it is currently registered, you have to unregister it, otherwise, unless the guy who previously owned it reported it as lost or stolen, you would be using his account to buy books, via the Kindle.
Why can't you register it? Of course you could unregister it and register it to your own account. Collections are a way to put the books into different categories, like Read, Unread, Science Fiction, Mystery, Edgar Allen Poe, etc. the are actually tags, so books can be in more than one collection. Collections are like folders. Collections are enabled once a kindle is registered to an Amazon account. Any second hand kindle you buy should already be unregistered. Nothing will happen to stop you putting your own books on it by usb its just as an unregsitered kindle you can't organise them at all on the kindle. I'm not actually ure you can even set up a kindle initially (if its been set back to factory defaults) if you don't register it as it prompts you during the set up process.
I don't see why you can't set up an Amazon account at .com and just register it to that. You don't have to actually use the account just set it up for your kindle. Even get a seperate email address for it. A hotmail, or gmail account. |

If the Kindle is black-listed (possibly stolen or lost) you will not be able to register it and therefore organize books into collections. If it's not black-listed, you can register it. Maybe try registering it in the shop to your Amazon account?

Ehm, why on earth wouldn't you be able to organize sideloaded books into collections?
![]() Mind you, depending on the firmware (best to either run the latest firmware or <=5.4.0), Cloud Collections would be a mess and offer you extra nags on top of nags for sideloaded books. Or so I've heard. @OP, The PW can do anything the K4 can do, aside for edge cases regarding the jailbreak. If you could register your K4, you can register the PW. You can also just skip registering and use it unregistered. Unless the seller ripped you off and sold you a stolen devlce, always a risk when buying secondhand. A blacklisted PW is no more able to be registered than a blacklisted K4. Although blacklisting will only affect your ability to register. If you do end up jailbreaking it (over the serial port, of course), then there are hacks that bypass the native UI and create collections directly through the Content Catalog. Effectively, you get collections without registering. ![]() |
