pdf to epub mystery

I'm confused as to Calibre's workings when it comes to pdf files. Most of the time it simply produces an epub text file, with images as appropriate.

With some books occasionally though, it simply takes the pdf pages and converts them to png image files, ending up effectively with what is a 'pdf book in an epub cover'.

I've looked at the settings and can't find anything obvious I've missed so I'm puzzled - from my point of view the conversion just to png files is rather less than helpful: they might as well be left as they were.

I presume this is something simple - please can someone enlighten me?

Thanks

That will happen when the PDF file in question contains images (usually scans of pages) of the text instead of the actual text

And there's no option to do otherwise?

I guessed that was the reason, but I thought that somewhere you'd designed in some sort of OCR software - obviously not!!!

Thanks Kovid.

Nope, no OCR in calibre. Beyond its purview

You want OCR, get a dedicated program to do it. The best in the business is usually said to be ABBYY Finereader, but that does cost serious money. The best free option is Google's tesseract engine, with various frontends.
