Nook user looking at options with folders/shelves etc

I am a nook user and planning on migrating to another device in the near future. I have a lot of nooks and books in the B&N ecosystem. One of the features I am looking for is similar to what the Nook Color tablet had in its shelf feature. I was able to buy/pre-order a book and easily add it to a shelf "unread". I then moved books as I read them into shelves by month/year. Books could be in multiple shelves. This could be easily done on the e-reader itself without having to view a list of all books and select a checkbox of the books I wanted on the shelf. Unfortunately this feature never made it into the eink versions of the nook. The UI there is horrible for shelves. I am not interested in nook features at this time.

So does the Kindle have anything like this? Can I manage my books on the device and create folders or shelves or collections or tags or what-have-you that gives me this kind of functionality? I don't require it be shared on all devices but I do want to manage this on the device itself not on a PC or web browser.

The Kindle has collections, which work much as you describe. The same book can be in multiple collections, and collections can be managed on the device.

I did a little digging after the post and discovered the same thing. My early searches failed due to incorrect terminology.

Can sideloaded content via the kindle email be placed in collections?

The term "sideloading" is generally used only to refer to books transferred to the device via USB. If you email a book to Amazon, it gets stored in Amazon's Cloud storage.

Both sideloaded books and those downloaded from Cloud storage can be put in collections, yes.

The collections on the Kobo ereaders work in a similar way as well. Books can be on multiple collections; from the library lists, a book can be put onto one or more collections; from the collection list, books can be selected, including via a search, to be added to a collection. About the only thing that is missing is while reading, adding a book to a collection.

And if you are a calibre user, it can maintain the collections on Kobo ereader.

Is the Kindle collection thing a checklist of all the books you own? Because that is the same as the nook shelf interface on the simple touch and I have >700 books. Paging through that to add one book to a collection is pretty horrible. And I don't want to do this on my PC if at all possible, most because the main use for me is to keep pre-ordered books in a folder/shelf/collection of their own.

You can manage books in collections on the Kindle two ways -- by managing the collection itself, which offers a list of all books and you can check which ones you want in the collection, or by managing the book, which will show a list of collections that the book is/can be in.

Either way, you can sort the collections/books by the usual sorting options, i.e. Recent, Title, Author.

Excellent news. The Nook simple touch only allows the first way and has no sorting.

The Kindle also has useful shortcuts, such as being able to add an entire page of books to a collection at once. Particularly useful when sorting books by author.

I never knew about that! But I just looked and found it under the Menu.

Apparently even I can learn things.

I made the switch last Friday and have been organizing everything from my nook. It has been a good choice and given the options I believe the Kindle platform is the best at the moment.
