Karma explained ?

Sorry if this is not the place to post this ...

Is there an explanation of the Karma system anywhere ? I have considered giving karma loads of time but it seems to say I reduce my karma score by 80 points .... is that how it works ? do I start with '0' ? What is the normal karma to give ?

Sorry if this is such an elementary Q
