				Mom's broken 6th kindle...any suggestions?

			Howdy,

My mother loves her kindle to death...literally. She uses it all day long off and on and likes to take it with her in her pocketbook when she is out and about. She picks my nephew up from school and likes to read while she waits in the giant pickup conga line. She has the leather amazon cases to protect the screen but invariably she still ends up breaking the screen. She is on her 6th kindle right now and I am hoping for some suggestions I could pass on to help her make the new paperwhite model last a while. The latest got a cracked screen in her pocketbook even though she had it in the leather case. She has had a couple break from small falls onto the bed or from the bed onto the floor. She has been extra careful to not drop them past couple of kindles. I want to tell her to not put the kindle in her pocketbook at all with the heavy wallet and other junk in there...it seems counter-productive. I know she is going to want too though because like I said she takes it everywhere with her. Does anyone know of a case that could actually provide protection in that kind of scenario? It would be ideal to find some kind of case that can withstand the dreaded pocketbook! The glass backed screens are kinda fragile so I don't know what to suggest. Thanks!! |

Maybe she needs a different kind of pocketbook or a larger one? I keep my kindle in one, but it is in a separate division from my wallet and keys. I only keep a small notebook in there with the kindle.

Get a neoprene sleeve (~$20) that's large enough to hold both the PW and its case. It adds bulk, but also a greater degree of protection. In order to work properly, she has to keep the PW inside the case it's already in. Then she needs to put that combo inside the neoprene sleeve before placing it inside her purse. Failure to use both layers of protection will more than likely result in another broken screen.

Keep in mind that this suggestion isn't foolproof. An object with a sharp corner can apply just the right about of force to defeat both layers. Also, a fall can still crack the glass substrate, even with both layers in place; although it's less likely to do so. As always... YMMV |

Perhaps she needs something like this that totally encases the device when not in use...

I have a suggestion. It will make the Kindle larger but it should give pretty good protection. It is an M-Edge Executive case. It's pretty well padded. The purple one i on sale for just under $12.

![]() http://www.medgestore.com/shop/kindl...ite1/executive The problem with a lot of cases is they can be easily wedged open and then the screen is easy to get at to damage. This one has a strap to keep the cover closed and it's not easy at all to accidentally have the strap removed and the cover opened. Last edited by JSWolf; 10-28-2013 at 09:39 PM. |

I second tubemonkey's suggestion, and actually go case crazy with my gadgets: they all have a sleeve around their cases, because I also carry a glass bottle with me, so I need the extra protection. You could even up the degree of protection by chosing a padded zippered sleeve instead of a neoprene sleeve, which, of course, should fit the kindle AND its case.

This is the type of sleeve I mean, or a timbuk2 like this one. |

The metal case which is made by Amazon should protect the unit as long as you do not place any metal objects near it. My wife places her metal objects in a separate compartment in her pocketbook when I have her carry my HDX or PW for my use.

The case should always be closed when not in use actually reading on it. |

I think all of the suggestions are good ones. I carry my Kindle (and before that my Sony 350 and 650) with me in my purse everywhere I go. All my devices have only been in the official covers--no additional protection. In the over 4 years I've been doing this haven't broken a screen yet (knock on wood!). Like krazy4kats, I do have a separate pocket in my purse that only has my reader in it. But, with your Mom's history of bad luck with devices, a little added protection (a sleeve or more robust case) might not be a bad idea!

Keep in mind that this setup adds quite a bit of bulk and weight to the device; a big turnoff for many, but not me. Additionally, it retails for $70 ($60 on Amazon). That's quite expensive. I was able to get my case on clearance for $30. I kept the Fire HD7 because it was a package deal ($128 + $30). |

I like the added protection of having two "cases" when carrying my devices about. |

When I said neoprene sleeve, I was thinking of the padded ones with zippered closures. Thanks for clarifying it. I use cases like that to transport my cased devices. Short of an expensive OtterBox, they add the right amount of protection to satisfy my comfort level. |
