Calibre truncates the file name

So instead of me having two files with a name

The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror vol 1/The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror Vol 1 - Various.epub
The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror vol 2/The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror Vol 2 - Various.epub

I have two files named like this:

The Mammoth Book of Best New Horro (1)/The Mammoth Book of Best New Ho - Various.epub
The Mammoth Book of Best New Horro (2)/The Mammoth Book of Best New Ho - Various.epub

Is there a way to fix that?

And another question:

Every time the app updates the search settings change. It is the one in searching - Highlight results instead of restricting the book list to the results.

Thank you

Edit: Also what reason would there be for Calibre NOT to display the formats?

Choose books with shorter Titles?

Change your OS to one that does not have file name/pathname limits ?

This subject has be covered before in these forums.
Calibre is compatible with all the listed OS, not just the ones you or I use. The names need to fit on all of them

P.S. Change your OS to one that does not have file name/pathname limits ? - I thought the limit was 255 characters for Windows, My file names do not reach that [including the full path]

Doesn't matter what OS you use, as you state:

The file name is the same for all of them.

Calibre is written to avoid reaching the character limit. My suggestion is to ignore how calibre writes the files inside its library/database structure.

If you let us know what you want to accomplish I'm sure we can help you out with a solution that keeps you away from the file name that calibre creates for its own tracking.

I would like to send the files to someone, but this would mean copying the files out of the library and renaming them. I have a LOT of clutter and small files and would like to avoid any duplicates. It's just if I copy those two files in a separate directory even I don't know which file is which. I would like not to include opf files. My friend doesn't use Calibre. Also I would like to avoid copying and renaming every time I'm sending documents and I tend to give descriptive long names. Currently I'm moving the database into a new folder that will shortens the path with 11 characters and the path will be 5 characters but again, from reading older discussions and filed bugs, Calibre doesn't reach even the half of the allowed characters in Win.

Also can you advice on the other two questions? (The search option and the format display?)

'Save to Disk' is your friend. You can configure the save template to get the descriptive filename you want.

Use Save to disk: (include the OPF and possibly covers) if the format does not already include the updated metadata/cover (hint: polish)

then you could zip all the books in the series into a Zip with the series name

Thank you, I will look into that option. But what If I am sharing the files in my local network. I will have duplicates and sharing with the default names is really confusing.

Select the two files and use Save to disk. Under Preferences - Saving books to disk there is a template that lets you get very specific with the format for naming any file saved to disk.

Beside the Save to disk feature you can export books in other ways. When I want to send my daughter a book I email her the book from within calibre. The book is named by Title - Author.epub or whatever format you have as your preferred format.

I think calibre will always truncate at a specific length. You will not win this battle, use the tools the GUI provides for exporting books from the database.

Format is displayed in the Book details pane (The book icon in the lower right). Or you can create a custom column for format.

If the toggle for search changes back with each update this may be a bug. Learn how to submit a bug report here.

FYI, for other folks who might read this, both formats that polish currently works with update the metadata and cover while saving to disk.

Belt and Suspenders
Polishing the internal book is redundent in this case.

BTW there is another solution when the other user also has Calibre

Copy (selected books) to (a new) Library. Then mail that library.
The other user can choose to use standalone or merge into existing

You are right. I lost miserably. Thank you for all the advice. Will look into all those options now, after filing the bug.

Thank you again.
