Screen refresh problem kindle 2

I've been having a recurring problem with my kindle 2.

In the normal course of using my Kindle 2 I touch some button or combination of buttons that brings up the symbol box. This is the one normally revealed and hidden by touching the SYMB key.

I can't find a way to hide it again. Pressing the SYMB key doesn't work. The screen isn't cracked. The box stays there no matter what I do, until I restart the kindle.

Any idea what this could be? The only reason I worry about it is that it's unusual behavior and I wonder if it's an indication of some sort of deeper problem?
