calibre for windows rt

Hi there
This my first post. I have recently bought a windows surface rt. Is calibre compatible with this operating system? I did try to download it without success.
Does anyone have a solution please. Thanks.

The current versions of Calibre do not run on Windows RT as they are for Intel processors, and Windows RT runs on Systems based on ARM processors. That is the problem with Windows RT - it needs new versions of application built specially for it, existing Windows program's do not work.

I think that it is unlikely that a Windows RT compatible version of Calibre is likely to appear any time soon (but I could be wrong)

IIRC Microsoft does not allow arbitrary programs to run on windows RT. Only programs written in one of the approved languages. So you'll likely never see any win32 programs on windows rt.

It could be done, it's just probably not worth it. You can target Python code to .NET using IronPython, but the entire UI would have to be rewritten, most of the storage subsystem would probably have to be rewritten, components like the content server don't really make sense on RT, etc.

Windows RT is roughly equivalent to Android or iOS, more focused on consumption rather than creation (where calibre falls under the "creation" category, since you're creating and managing libraries, doing conversions, serving content, etc). Calibre on Android and iOS doesn't really make sense, nor does calibre on Windows RT.

That said, there are ebook readers like Freda available for Windows RT that can read from OPDS catalogs, and you also have the option of opening files from your local network via SMB (something neither iOS nor Android have built-in, but that Just Works(tm) in Windows RT). Run calibre somewhere else on your network, and consume the results from Freda.

Windows RT is the next evolution of Windows CE - in other words, closer to the mobile version of Windows, it can't do things that you'd expect Windows to do.

Sadly, the online hosted Calibre, Readbeam, is no more, that would have been an ideal solution.
