Creating a smaller file
I have an eBook that is 25.3 MB. I'm trying to send it to my Kindle email (so it will also show in the Kindle app on my phone). I use Calibre as my eBook management software and the email keeps getting rejected b/c Google only supports attachments up to 25 MB in size (guess it's coming from my Gmail acct).
Is there any way to make this file smaller, even just a little bit since I only need it to be .3 MB smaller? Last edited by me10lee83; 07-26-2012 at 08:04 AM. |

Why not load it to your phone via USB? Both iOS and Android versions of the Kindle app allow loading via USB.

Good suggestion, thanks. I didn't realize you could manually upload to the Kindle app for Android. Though it probably would only store your progress locally on each device I'm guessing?
I was actually able to do some file conversion in Calibre to get it to less than 25 MB though. The original file was mobi, convered that to epub which was only 3 MB. Removed the original mobi from Calibre and then converted the epub back to mobi and it remained fairly small. It also turns out that the Kindle will accept zipped files as long as they contain a valid personal document file within it, so was able to zip the original 25 MB file, which made it a little over 24 MB and email that to my Kindle. (Just took forever to arrive so I didn't think it was working which is why I also tried the Calibre conversion- at least now I know two methods of getting large ebooks on the Kindle!) |

Yes - just copy the book into the "/mnt/sdcard/Kindle" folder.

Another thing you can do if you have this problem again in the future is to use Calibre to "tweak the ePub" (when it is in ePub format of course). I'm presuming the file size is so large because of images. If you tweak the ePub and look for the images, and resize some of them so they are smaller, then make a mobi file, it will have a smaller file size.

The file size limit is 50 MB for the 'Send to Kindle' app for PC or Mac. Choose your 'Kindle for phone' app as the device you want to the file delivered to and you can have the file archived in your Kindle Library as well if you tick that box.
