Love the new 0.8.38 Update
You guys continue to amaze me. The new "automatically add books" feature in Calibre rocks.
Many thanks. cheers |

Pretty cool. It is under preferences, calibre behavior. Just a little worried about deleting books after they are automatically added. I am adding books from My Digital Editions folder, as most of the books I buy are Epubs.
Would it make sense to ask for this to be an option? Or am I ridiculous to keep the books after they have been added to calibre? |

Hrm.. I don't think I'll add the books in My ADE folder, since I have library books there. On the other hand, I might add the download folder.
I wonder if it is possible to add a format option? So that in my case it only adds books in epub and lrf? But I agree, a great job ![]() |

It's actually under Preferences > Adding Books, there is a new tab labelled Automatic Adding. I like that it automatically deletes, saves me the step of manually deleting the files in the linked folder myself every once in a while.
If people are going to designate folders like Digital Editions or My Kindle Content (K4PC), then it would be better if the files weren't automatically deleted. |

Hmmm...downloaded the new release just for this feature and then saw the "Files in this folder will be deleted" when going to set this up. Was going to put it for my Library books folder, but auto-deleting would both confuse Digital Editions and prevent you from returning books early.
Normal behavior for manually adding books isn't to delete the original source file. Should Calibre be deleting files that it doesn't "own" in any scenario? |

It would be nice to be able have more than folder for Calibre to add books from.

A less destructive method for Calibre to keep track would be to just rename the ebooks as they're added (e.g. MyBook.epub -> MyBook.epub.added) or to keep a separate database/list of added books. However, the latter would probably have noticeable performance penalty with a large number of automatically added books. |

The problem that I can see (and I opened a bug report) is that when it adds books from the "watch folder" it is creating duplicate entries. Other than that it works great. I don't mind the auto delete function... I just created a "watch folder" on my desktop so I can copy files to it that I want calibredb to add. It's saved a lot of time so far - except for having to go back and merge duplicate books!

As ilovejedd pointed out, keeping the files behind in the add folder is a big performance hit over time if you dont clean it out manually from time to time. It means calibre has to keep track of the files it has already added and compare every file in the folder to the history every time the folder is scanned.
As for duplicates, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/926962 |

In most cases, wouldn't just keeping the timestamp of the last file added be sufficient?

Not really, there's too much potential for magic behavior where some files end up not getting added for reasons that are unclear. I prefer the clean behavior of removing after adding. And in some OSes (*cough*windows*cough*) filesystem performance degrades very badly when there are large numbers of nodes in directory entry.

*lol* and sometimes windows *grins* has arbitrary dates and it's frustrating *lol*.
I went and checked the bug report... if you could give us an option to have it duplicate check that would be awesome! Then we could either use it or not depending on how we are using the watch file. |

Just don't try to complicate things by using a folder not dedicated to the automatic adding feature. Last edited by DoctorOhh; 02-04-2012 at 11:33 PM. |
