Introducing CarolynBG

Hi, I'm a researcher at a university in Colorado; we have a small grant to do a small study with Kindles in a local grade school over the next year.

I'm very happy to have found this site, as it's already answered some questions for me. I'm now at the point of being ready to actually go forth and buy Kindles and ebooks for them, and have some major questions already. I'll go ahead and post those in the appropriate forum. I'll try to keep my Kindle-specific questions to the Kindle sub-groups, but some of my questions are more generic, I think. I know with the great amount of experience here I'll get an answer (or several!) that will help!

Hello and welcome, Carolyn. Yes, Kindles are spreading to schools now. I read some schools in my general part of the state are issuing Kindles to students. Let us know the results of your research. I'd be interested in knowing.

Indeed Carolyn, welcome to MR and for sure keep us posted on your project, especially in how the kids like the Kindles and how the Kindles stand up to the ...ahem...abuses which will inevitably be thrown their way by those little boys and girls. May be very useful real-world examples for those more clumsy adults among us.

Sounds great!

EDIT: Carolyn, think about making a new thread for your K3 project. I would think that the subject would be of some interest to people around here.

Thanks for the welcome! I'll try to remember to let y'all know how things are going... I've got two threads going right now on the issues of trying to figure out some kind of db of the books we've bought and which ones the kids have (that's in the general section because the original question should apply to any eReader, not just Kindles -- though it seems to have morphed into a more Kindle-specific conversation about other things), and whether the ads on the Kindle with special offers would be too obnoxious or crassly commercial to warrant spending the extra on the regular Kindles, or if the ads would be innocuous enough that we could save money to be used on more books.

I will be buying covers for the Kindles, so hopefully that will help a lot in saving on wear and tear! I guess we'll find out!

If I were to make a general thread about this project, where should I put it? The choice of Kindle is really not the most important thing, more the idea of putting eReaders into the hands of kids at home. (The main reason Kindle was chosen was because of the text-to-speech, but I don't think that's going to be major factor. I would have liked the touch Nook better, myself.)

Thanks again!
Carolyn

^ re: the ads. We all know money is tight, especially, sadly, for schools. If the choice is between K3 ads and less books, I say go with the ads. You can always make a new lesson plan explaining basic economic considerations and strategies in the modern age to your kids. They gotta learn sometime, right? And I understand the K3 ads aren't terribly annoying anyways, at last from some folks I have heard from.

re: where to post. I am new here, but I would think either the Kindle forum or the General Discussion sub-forum would be OK. Kinda leaning towards the Kindle forum myself since that is the HW you will go with. And your observations on how the K3's survive the kids would be of more interest to Kindle owners specifically.

Either is fine IMO.

Actually, I'm a researcher at the local university, not actually a teacher in the local schools (so no lesson plans), but money is tight here too right now :-/ . My boss/PI is the queen of grants, yet this is the only thing she is able to provide me with right now after submitting several over the last year [we've just finished a huge multi-university grant that had many folks at full or half-time, as desired; went from that to nothing]. (Get this, my stipend out of this grant is $5000, which we decided to split over 18 months just to keep me employed with the university. That's 6.5% time, if the business office did the math right. Technically that's 2.6 hours/week.)

My goal is to have as much money available for books as possible, so that if some kid is really plowing through them, or I didn't find the right books to interest a particular kid, I can go buy more (assuming that book is on kindle). Also, I intend to get the Harry Potter books for them when those are available, and I don't know what the rules or cost on those will be. If I can save money by getting the KSO or by finding less expensive covers or by lucking into a colleague who is willing to do some of the translations of parent permissions for free because she feels she has benefitted from feedback from our group, so much the better. For me, it's about the kids at the school (it obviously isn't about getting a paycheck, though it is in small part about staying associated with the university as long as possible, but I also need to be connected with the university for that period of time just to do the study at all).

Perhaps I'll post a short message in the general section referencing the project then post from then on in the Kindle section.

Thanks for your interest in our study!

A quick update: probably tipping over to Nook Touch, due to some conversations with the Unquiet Librarian and reading other things, conversations with Amazon reps and B&N reps, and actually getting to play with a Nook touch. (Good thing I hadn't posted my magnum opus about the project on the Kindle forum yet, eh?)

^ lol. Well, the new Nook Touch does seem to be a nice piece of kit. Budget-wise, things still work out for you? Is BN helping out a bit?
