Can't get away from paper books

I received a couple of good books as gifts that I've been wading through. Paper, of course. It's hard to convince people to give ebooks as gifts because that gives nothing to unwrap.

And now Borders is going, going, almost gone, so I ran over tonight and bought 6 books at a big discount. Paper, of course.

And it's not like I don't have unread paper books from last Christmas and some others I bought here and there.

It's my goal to stop reading paper at all and read everything on my Sony Reader. But it's been a while since I even turned it on. And it might be a while until I get back to it.

Oh, well. At least I have lots of good stuff to read.

you could always take up book scanning, scan them and turn them into epubs.

I am an avid ebook reader, but I still find a paper book enticing if it is something I particularly want and is on special, a rare 2nd hand find or something beautifully illustrated.
As for gifts, can you persuade family members to buy a fancy cover for your ebook reader or something similar? After the failure of Borders I am very wary about gift cards - I only escaped losing mine because of the warning I got via this site (and a very quick "buying spree" to spend it all before the crash!). As it was a very special gift and designed to keep me in books for a whole year you can imagine how upsetting it would have been to lose this!

i plan on asking for hard copies of certain books for christmas/b-days. for my day to day reading i have become utterly addicted to ebooks and i was a hardcore hater up until i got my kindle.

i think the price differences alone made getting over my love of the smell/feel of paper very easy. i'll take the ability to get 5 books for the price of one over a nice smell any day lol. and the hard copies that i do want are stuff that i read in e format and would like a nice copy of. other than the book club i belong to and the aforementioned special occassions, i think my days of actively seeking out print are over.

I prefer my Kindle, even if the screen is frozen at the moment. But the price of books at the library (zero), means that I'm still doing most of my reading in paper. The library loans ebooks, but only has one copy of each book available at a time. Meaning that just about everything is usually checked out.

I'm a huge ebook advocate, and I just bought two books in paper --The Word Museum: The Most Remarkable English Words Ever Forgotten and Forgotten English: A Merry Guide to Antiquated Words, Packed with History, Fun Facts, Literary Excerpts, and Charming Drawings. They were $0.01 + $3.99 shipping each. The first one is $14 for the Kindle version ($2 more than paper!), and the second isn't available as an ebook.

Hopefully the print won't be too small to read.

I've pretty much stopped buying paper books but I still read paper library books. I have like, 200 unread books on my reader so my motivation to buy any more books is alarmingly low.

I love my Ereaders (moon+ on my phone, Kindle app on my PC, audio books in the car and, of course, my Sony PRS 600) but there is still a place in my life for paper-books.

Specialist publications (watchmaking in my case) always benefit imho from being able to flick back and fore.

I was an avid hardback reader (bought mostly from Amazon, Half.com, and ebay), but since I have gotten my Nook, I've bought only ebooks. While I still like to sit in the family room and look at the various bookcases, I can just turn on my Nook and have access to the 100s of books I have already purchased (lots of freebies). I also am a member of the Free Library of Philadelphia and have become spoiled there. The only paper book I will be getting are the few subscriptions I have for my aquarium magazines. I just don't like reading a magazine on an ereader yet.

I'm not picky, I'll read anything if it's good.

I try to avoid buying paper book but I borrow them from the library or from my mother, who reads a lot. I'll buy a book if I really want it and can't find in in e-form, or sometimes just on a whim. Not so long ago I bought a paper version of a public domain book I already had for free on my Opus. But that was a special case, the book is about art history and the photos/reproductions are a big part of it.

Its the pretty pictures on the covers... Everytime I pass by the dead tree book aisle, I am distracted by the pretty pictures. In an effort to clean house, I choose not to purchase them, but its difficult to resiste the pretty pictures...

I love my Sony, but I will continue to buy paper books whenever I find something tasty that:
  1. Is in good condition and was made prior to 1900 (old book collectors = love)
  2. Looks enticingly beautiful and durable (I'm a sucker for leather-bound classics)
  3. Uses many illustrations (especially books about art)
  4. Is unavailable in digital form (of course)
I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. To me, the Sony is there for portability and the archiving of works I don't have or want in hard copy -- it's not a replacement for all books.

:I still get p-books now & then. A lot of times my book club chooses books that are not available in e-book so I have to get the p-book version.
