Which would you rather have?
If you had a choice between two nook Classics, one of them being the older version, ser#1001xxxxx and the other being the newest version available, which would you choose and why?
Let's leave the "cracking buttons" issue aside on this question. I'm talking about performance and convenience. |

I modified my older Nooks to deal with the cracking issue, but even with that, there is no question. I would take the old version because of the ease of rooting. If you are able to root the new one, then there is no real reason to go either way.
Without rooting, for me, the Nook is worthless. It cannot handle large numbers of sideloaded books without screwing up and it has a lousy shelf system and it has a terrible system for searching and sorting. |

Which would you rather own: an older nook Classic, ser#1001xxxxx or a brand new nook Classic?
Here is why I ask this question: I have a nook Classic that will be out of warranty come June. I bought it at a "big box" electronic store. I've been having intermittent problems with it. They are nothing major; mostly it's just freezing up. Turning the nook off completely and them turning it back on solves the problem. It's a pain in the butt, but otherwise the nook is OK. I called the "big box" store and described the problem. They asked for the serial number and said they would call me back. And they did! They said they called B&N and B&N told them to accept it and give me a new one. So I have the option of keeping what I have or getting a new one. I have read that B&N has made some "cost cutting" type changes in the newer Classics. SO I'm trying to decide if I should get a new one or stick with the older, ser# 1001xxxxxx I already have.. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Last edited by ynot; 04-17-2011 at 07:48 PM. |

OK, so the real question is: Would you rather have a defective old Nook, or a newer model that works properly. Stated that way, it doesn't sound like all that difficult of a decision.
I assume you don't expect the problem with your current device to get better by itself. But you sound as though you do expect that it won't get worse. My experience is that neglected problems almost always get worse. Clearly, you can live with the problem now. But in a few months, you may find yourself with a problem that's much worse--or a device that's entirely dead--and no warranty. If it were my Nook, I'd take the warranty replacement. |

I personally would rather have one that is defective free and the knowledge they will stand behind it if I should have any more issues. |

They went from a socket chip to a different soldered chip.
You have to go with the replacement. If the old unit breaks, you will be stuck with a new purchase and the out of pocket costs anyway. If you replace under warranty, you have a small chance that they will replace with an older version. This is the main reason I bought my Jetbooks. When my Nook dies I will not buy another. They are worthless, for me, without the rooted library. |
