I just got an iPod Touch
Hi, my name is Mick and I am an avid reader. I just bought an iPod Touch and I have been successful getting my ebooks onto it. I have tried Calibre and I watched the introductory video 3 times and I still can't get Calibre to send to my device.
I have all of my ebooks in Word format as that is probably the easiest to reformat to any reader. In the video, it shows a completely different screen that I have in 0.7.24 and I do not have a send to device button. I know that formats evolve and you have to keep up. But... am I missing something? I have edited the metadata and resaved the file and sent it to my iPod using the iTunes program. However it does not have the correct library entry, but has the anonymous author instead of the book name on one line and the author. I'm sorry that my introductory thread has grown to a help session. But I can't seem to figure it out. Mick |

Hi, Mick!
I just bought a Touch myself (it's in transit to me from the other side of the country). Do you have a reader program, such as Stanza or iReader, installed? You'll need some reader program that can handle Word files (which I don't think iReader does, and am just about certain Stanza doesn't), or have Calibre convert your files to a format your reader of choice can handle. According to my limited Google-fu, if you really insist on keeping your files in Word .doc format, there's an app called MegaPhone, but according to the site I found this mentioned on, it's $19.95. Other choices are Documents To Go (which I got along decently with in its Palm incarnation) ($9.99 for the base edition, $16.99 for Premium), or Quickword (at $8.99). |

![]() Welcome to mobileread .... I don't have an iPod, so I'm not too sure why you ca't use Calibre....Have a look here in the Calibre Threads and see if there is an answer there - or here the Apple threads. Maybe it has to do with iTunes? Not to worry there be experts a-plenty to guide you... Just ask - they don't bite .... (often) ![]() |

With my iTouch I found if I send books converted to the epub format to the device from Calibre I can read them in the free iBooks app. I prefer Stanza over iBooks. There are directions
http://www.mobileread.mobi/forums/sh...ad.php?t=42023 that may help you set up Calibre's content server which makes it a breeze to put epub formatted books on an iTouch. |

Hi Mick
Welcome to the Forum. I have an iPhone 3G and use Goodreader (it also works on an iTouch according to theie website). Costs $1.99 (that's A$) but they have lite version for free. Read PDFs and Word Docs. I can transfer files using iTunes. |

Don't mean to be contrary but there is an old saying in the IT field that "its frequently valuable to listen to the nay sayers when solving an It problem." On the subject of ebook reading on an ipod there is a few problems:
1) Its an awfully small screen 2) Its frightfully expensive 3) Its proprietary and one may not want a giant company telling you what you can and can not read. |

Thanks for the responses. I am using Stanza and able to read the books just fine. I like the small format on the iPod Touch. I've used a Toshiba PDA for the last 4 years. It still performs well, but it's memory is limited to what SD card is in it. It does have some problems, like forgetting where I left off. I was able to pick up a 3 month old iTouch for a really good price. I like the way it feels and how fast it loads up. I've got an 8GB one and it's just great for my needs. I've got about 1093 mp3s on it and I'm going to put about 500 epubs on it.
I am successful converting word to epub with ePub Maker by ePingsoft. Great program that does the conversion pretty fast and very accurate. My issue is using Calibre to upload to my iTouch. I have not been successful to get Calibre to upload to the iTouch. Looking at the how to video it shows opening a file, converting it to epub and sending it to the device. Great! I have no send to device button. How do I send my files to my iTouch? I've been through all of the buttons and there is not send to. Am I using an out of date version of Calibre (0.7.24)? I hope someone can shed some light on this. Thanks for listening. Mick |

You have two choices. One is to open Calibre and plugin your iTouch. It can take a couple of minutes, but iTunes will open and Calibre should recognize your iTouch. If it doesn't, then click on "connect share icon" and choose connect to iTunes. After a minute or so, you will get two new icons next to your Calibre library icon. One will be send to device.
The other way is through stanza. You will first need to use ipconf on your computer to get the address of your computer. Then go to Calibre "preferences", "sharing over the net" and follow the instructions on that page to set up the calibre server. Then go back to stanza on your iTouch and set up a new entry under "shared" for your ip address to Calibre. cheers |
