Angry Removing links

I am reading a great book on my Kindle Voyage and loving it. However the book has hundreds and hundreds of 'popular highlights' underlined all through it. Most pages have at least one, some pages have multiple lines underlined. It becomes almost impossible not to touch one, which makes a pop up open, covering the page. This is driving me mad and I'm probably going to abandon the book even though its great and I want to finish it.
Yes, I do have the popular highlights and all other similar options turn off. I've tried the file in 2 other Kindles, also with these options turned off, and they are still there.
I have spent hours Googling trying to find a way to get rid of them but the only answer seems to be to delete them one by one. There are hundreds of them!
Is there a plug in for Calibre or any other way to remove all of these maddening highlights please?

What happens if you convert it in calibre and sideload via USB? Are the highlights still there in the converted version?

Yes, I have tried that. I've tried converting it multiple times, various formats.
Those links are still there.

Turning Popular Highlights off works for me on my Paperwhite 10th generation, running firmware version 5.18.1. I assume also on my newer Kindles as well, but that one is closest approximation to the firmware Voyage is running.

You cannot delete popular highlights, only hide them.

There is a sidecar file that stores them (in associated .sdr folder), but I don't know the file extension for it or if that file contains other stuff like X-ray that you might want, or whether it would just download again on sync if you deleted it.

Maybe try a Restart?

If you are side loading, make it a personal document (PDOC) and it should not download the file with the personal highlights in it.

For conversion to AZW3 choose Sharing option in conversion settings.

For conversion to KFX (with KFX Output plugin), PDOC is the default.
