Sideloaded kepub, doubles the pages, starts in the middle
Wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the calibre forum.
Occasionally, when I sideload an ePub, using the calibre Kobo plug-in to convert to kepub as it sends, the kepub will have double the number of pages and the book will start in the middle. So I bypass the cover, copyright, etc. and chapter 1 is on page 318 out of 637. Loading the same ePub on my 13 year old Nook STwG, everything works correctly. |

On a Kobo ereader, ePubs use the Adobe Synthetic Page Number algorithm which is consistent regardless of font size, margins, etc. while the kepub algorithm is pretty much one page per screen so any changes in font size, margins, paragraph spacing, etc. will affect the page count.
As for the starting in the middle of the book? The only times I've seen that is when the navigation document (nav.xhtml for ePub3 or toc.ncx for ePub2) is not correctly structured. |

However, I open the book as brand new. Scroll past the cover, title page, copyright, etc. The title page shows as page 230 of 465 on my Libra. Copyright shows as 231 out of 465, Chapter 1 shows as 232 of 465. This is happening on both my Libra and my Clara (both with kepub). As mentioned, on ePub on my Nook, the file works properly. I'm sure it is the file, not the Kobo. But I'm not sure what is wrong with the file. |

Think I solved it. The XHTML files were named "Chapter 1". I renamed them as Chapter0001" and now the Libra is showing pages correctly. Haven't tried the Clara yet, but if it works on one, likely works on the other.
