Hello,
I recently purchased a used Kindle Oasis, and I understand that its current firmware version is compatible with the Winterbreak jailbreak. However, I’m concerned that the device might automatically update to a newer firmware during the initial setup process, particularly when connecting to the internet to sign in to my Amazon account. Is there a reliable way to prevent the device from updating itself at this stage? Or is such an automatic update unlikely to occur during setup? Additionally, as far as I’m aware, an internet connection is also required later in the actual jailbreak process. Could the device potentially update itself at that point as well? I appreciate any guidance you can offer—many thanks in advance for your help. |

See the section on “Preventing Automatic Updates.” Especially: “Delete any stray files ending in .bin, or have a similar name to “update.bin.tmp.partial” manually at every step of the Jailbreak guide.” I would add especially before any reboot whenever possible. And don’t linger when not in Airplane mode.

The Oasis (10th generation, the latest) may have 5.18.2, which is not compatible with Winterbreak. Earlier Oasis models are on earlier firmware versions, and would be.
If it's latest Oasis, and somehow it's still on 5.16.x or earlier I don't know what will happen or if there is some 100% sure way of preventing update. Maybe there is some window of opportunity after your credentials are accepted and (for example) immediately turning off your WiFi, while update is still downloading and can be interrupted before it finishes. It's commonly a 'feature' when you register a new, never-registered Kindle but I have only one experience registering a previously owned one (Oasis 2 I think). I don't remember it updating right away. Last edited by tomsem; Today at 03:50 AM. |
