Testing Apps library integration

So in looking for a first e-reader to use I am testing out the IOS apps. For some reason I feel its a high priority (for me) for the apps to sync data, reading position/series-collection info, etc. I guess this is because I can see myself using an Ipad or my phone when out and about. Outside in direct sunlight though I want something with e-ink. Syncing books is a bonus. I intend to primarily be side loading epubs and not using any vendors stores.

I purchased a new paperwhite to test out the Kindle ecosystem because thats easy to do here in the US, but will likely return it. My wife HAD an old Nook so we have a fair amount of books in the Nook library to test with.

What I have found is that the only app the recognized the most of the metadata from a Calibre epub is the Nook app. It present the information on the book (that I can't get from the Kindle) AND it stacks the books that are in a series in order. It will sync the reading position but I do need to side load the book independently to each device and then it will sync.

Pocketbook does a good job syncing books as well as reading position no matter which device I load the epub onto but I cant get series information to work and self organize. I like that it can use Calibres content server.

Kobo doesn't sync sideloaded books. I have read about how well Kobo handles Calibres metadata so if I resigned myself to only reading on the Kobo device perhaps this would work.

The kindle will sync my reading position and books if I mail the epub to the kindle address but I can't get any information on the book or series metadata from the book on the Paperwhite.

PLEASE if I am missing something let me know as I am new to Calibre as well as some of the apps/e-readers.

I don't want to buy a Nook ereader. We went to Barnes and Noble to test them out and left disappointed. I am leaning towards getting an Android based reader like the Boox Go7 and trying the built in reader and/or the Nook android app.
