Upload Epub to Calibre Duplicates Files
I would like to know if anyone is aware of the comparison process that Calibre performs when an EPUB file is uploaded to the Calibre library and it detects that the file already exists.
In other words, is the initial duplicate check based on the 1) file name, 2) the book’s title and author, 3) or the file’s unique hash? The latter would be the only method that actually guarantees the book (file) is a true duplicate. Thank you all for your attention, and thanks in advance to anyone who can help clarify this doubt. I believe it is Title - Author (and that is not 100% guaranteed to catch spelling diffs)
Consider setting the auto merge Preferences: Adding Books: Adding actions to what you would like. ![]() ![]() |

Not sure what it does if Add Books is set to get metadata from the format file, I don't use that option. BR |

As far as I can tell, the only item checked when adding books is the book title. It has been a bit of a pain when you add a book with the same title as another existing book but by a different author.

Thank you all for the comments.
I think I’ll use the 'Find Duplicates' plugin after the import, mainly to avoid long upload times. |

The normal built in check portion of a single book happens almost instantly. (Calibre field data is indexed internally) Find Duplicates can do a more extensive (criteria) check AFTER IMPORT. |
