Kindle 5.17.2 Jailbreak Question

Have a Kindle Scribe 2024 version on 5.17.2 and I managed to bypass the OOBE sign-in and am at the home screen unregistered.

Now, I understand that I can use WinterBreak to jailbreak my Kindle but this will require registering my Kindle.

I have 2 questions:
1. Should I manually update the firmware to the latest jailbreakable firmware version (5.17.3)?
2. I will go ahead and register the Kindle and then perform Winterbreak. Now, is there any way to perform a factory reset and retain the jailbreak? The goal is to return to an unregistered factory state while maintaining jailbreak. I will also be installing "fake registration" to allow creation of notebooks. Please do not suggest I unregister my Kindle manually. It is very important to be in a factory reset "fresh" state while maintaining jailbreak.

Just picked up a Kindle Colorsoft which shipped with the 5.18.0.2 firmware. My understanding is that this can be jailbroken using the Winterbreak method as I have noticed a few people saying they were able to jailbreak this firmware but KUAL wouldn't work.

My questions are:
1. Can it indeed be jailbroken using Winterbreak?
2. If so, which MRPI and KUAL should I use given people have been having trouble with this? The one on the Kindle Modding site or is there an updated working version?

Have previously installed KOReader on my Kobo but doing this on a Kindle is new to me so I'd appreciate the help. I believe KOReader can still be run via scriptlets without KUAL but I'd like to install that so I can disable OTA updates.

I just did this last night. Yes, Winterbreak works. No, KUAL doesn't. There are scripts available where you can install the OTA blocker as well as an OTA checker to confirm OTAs are being blocked and that you are in jailbroken mode. Scripts such as Kindle Forge will have a GUI and allow you to download other scripts, such as KOreader, etc.

It didn't for me, on Kindle Paperwhite Gen 12, 16 GB (with a kids option not in use yet), firmware 5.17.0 (4243130212), set to German (not that it should matter):

There was no KUAL book(let) when returning to the library after the initial ;log mrpi (just the Run Hotfix one), which got me looking here in the first place.

Up until that point everything worked following https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/WinterBreak/ to the letter.
Minor observations (for those who also wonder along that site's lines) being that:
- with e.g. WinRAR one needs to un-xz then untar https://fw.notmarek.com/khf/kual-mrinstaller-khf.tar.xz
- which shows no icons or error
- https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaki...t_HDRepack.bin does not match the pattern Update_KUALBooklet_*_install.bin of course
- the newer Kindles can only be "ejected" from their end rather than the PC

"Update your Kindle" wouldn't show as in https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaki...e_settings.png after copying Update_KUALBooklet_HDRepack.bin to root - from where it had disappeared when reconnecting USB (or probably already when disconnecting it).
In mrpackages it stays, but also disappeared after (re)running ;log mrpi

Unlike https://www.reddit.com/r/koreader/co...mment/njnuf9d/ there was no kual.kual yet in Documents either.

https://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/comm...mment/mv4wts6/ recommended a similar approach to yours and "Used KUAL Coplate files (keep in mind there are 2 of them)." Do I correctly understand (s)he means only one of them is to be used at a time, depending on one's hardware?

Quite a few in these threads incl. https://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/comm...after_running/ seem to have encountered (and not always solved) similar issues, and I'm not sure Update_KUALBooklet_c6ac782_install.bin reported to work on generations 8 or 10 is safe (or even better) for a gen 12 Paperwhite as well.

Of course my firmware is recent enough to require KUAL to https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaki...sable-ota.html (step 6), so I firewalled this Kindle's MAC address for the time being.

Edit: What finally did the trick was that after wondering if disappearing certain .bin files added over USB might be some "self-defense" in the firmware against memory shortage (which we create on purpose against OTA updates), and seeing eightchcee's "When it comes time to install KUAL, you will need to free up maybe 100-200mb" in https://www.reddit.com/r/kindlejailb..._kindle_basic/, I tried freeing up even more by deleting an entire 1 GB filler file over USB, and saw Update_KUALBooklet_HDRepack.bin install after yet another ;log mrpi at last.

Winterbreak and the hotfix at that link works- the regular one that is (I never needed to try the compatibility one).

The problem is that the KUAL (coplate) provided at the link below doesn't seem to work for the ColorSoft on firmware 5.18.0.2 (factory shipped version on a 2025 Colorsoft) for whatever reason even though Winterbreak and the hotfix have.
https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaki...ing-kual-mrpi/

It would be nice to have KUAL working.. but for anyone else in this situation there is a workaround. The renameotabin has two .sh files which can be placed in the documents folder so that they show up as books. You can use these without having to access them through KUAL. Then can proceed to get KOReader installed.

Thank you for your reply. Could you please give more detailed instructions on how to install koreader in this situation?

Follow step 3 - download the koreader installer (nightly), place it in the documents folder, eject kindle, run the booklet and koreader will be installed.

Hi!

I have a problem after jailbreaking my kindle colorsoft 2024.
It shipped a few days ago with version 5.18.0.1.0 (I think).

Jailbreak it with Winterbreak and everything goes fine. Executed the no update script.

From a day to another, Amazon block my account for security reasons and delete my last 3 shipments and unregistered the kindle from the account.

Now, when I connect it to WiFi and register it, said that cannot download the latest update, and I cannot continue. There is no button to exit or nothing similar.

Any idea how can I fix it?

Thanks!
