Tools Donwgrader 2.0 - simple KUAL addon to donwgrade your Kindle Firmware

Jailbroken PW3 on 5.15.1 here.

Downgrader doesn't work here, as it doesn't show up in Kual.

I dropped it inside the extensions folder. Also tried installing the bin file using mrpi, no success.

Yeah, definitely not working here. I even did this:

1. Format internal memory
2. Factory reset
3. Reinstall MRPI
4. Reinstall JB hotfix
5. Reinstall Kual
6. Install Downgrader

It doesn't show up in Kual. Doesn't matter whether I copy it over to extensions or install that bin package using mrpi, or both, it doesn't show up.

I had to use the first version of the downgrader, from the first page of this thread, not the one from Snapshots of NiLuJe's hacks. The updated one didn't show up in the KUAL, the old one did. Opened KUAL>Downgrader and selected PW3 and while it was restarting I copied bin file and after it booted up I reapplied the steps (KUAL>Downgrader and selected PW3). It's possible that my first steps weren't necessary, to run the downgrader without the bin file in the root of the Kindle.

FYI, I had the same situation, Jaibroken PW3 (popcorn method) with 5.15.1 FW. Good luck!

How do I use this if KUAL is broken?

My kindle is jailbroken but Amazon updated it to 5.15.1.1 so KUAL is broken and I need to downgrade it to use KUAL and KOreader

Is it possible to use the method outlined in the initial post to downgrade from 5.16.2.1.1 to 5.14.1? I recently jailbroke my Kindle using LanguageBreak, and I'd like to have access to the old UI.

I've been successful in downgrading a PW3 to 5.7.4 but that appears to be the floor.

Edit - 5.7.3.1 is the floor.

No way to get PW3 down to 5.6.5 without physical modifications huh?

I've just tried this after a succesful JB. Unfortunately, the kindle appears to be bricked and is stuck on the "Your Kindle is restarting." screen.

My Kindle 11th 2024 has been updated to version 5.18.1. I thought I had used the renameota extension, but I was wrong. Fortunately, the jailbreak survived. I tried to use this extension to go back to firmware 5.17.1.0.4, but during the "update" process, on the screen of the boy in the tree, I get an error 12. I wanted to go back to the previous firmware because Amazon did something that left my Kindle with more ghosts on the screen than in the previous firmware version.

After you do get it fixed, remember to go into KUAL and actually run the renameota Rename option. Just having the extension installed does not do anything.

@Jose how do you imagine to use this extension that predates the existence of your 2024 model device when said extension hasn't been updated in years??

If you want to downgrade you'll have to do the job of editing that /etc/version.txt file manually (or alternatively edit the extension yourself to add the support for your Kindle model) and then do the firmware install part by forcing a reboot without disconnecting the USB cable.


If you don't want to or don't know how to setup SSH connection ( = using USBNetLite hack) your best bets are either using a "RUNME.sh" script or download this "scriptlet" :

Thank you! I also tried manually editing the /etc/version.txt file. I changed the version number to 428976, which is equivalent to the number of the first firmware my Kindle model received, according to this Amazon page: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...deId=200203720.

I forced the update without unplugging the Kindle from the PC. It starts to update/downgrade, but suddenly stops and displays an error 12. I also tried AllowDowngrade.sh, edited the file to the number 428976, but got the same error 12. Also, I tried taking a chance without editing the AllowDowngrade file, and again got error 12.

@darkassassinua I made an account just to say this. I am so thankful to you for making this downgrader. I just bought a Kindle Oasis 9th gen and it came with 5.16.2.1.1 and I could tell that it was suffering more than needed with all that bloated nonsense. I used your downgrader to go from that all the way to 5.11.2.
Your tool successfully downgraded a device bought in 2025, from a 2023 firmware all the way to a 2019 firmware, with basically no hassle or tech knowledge from my side. 2023 is even after you developed downgrader 2.0. Its just incredible, I can only marvel. You are a literal legend to me
