Lightbulb Feature idea for Calibre (Unsure if it can be achieved with plugins but wth....)

Hi,

I would like to see FULL image-editing facilities inside Calibre
by utilizing a favourite graphics program (Photoshop, Paint.Net)
already on the system.

I used to use an audio program (Cakewalk) that used a similar
method for editing audio, (click on an audio sample, specify action,
and the external editor opens automatically) and Cakewalk and
Calibre are not so dissimilar, only in filetype.

When edited to satisfaction, click save in the external editor
and it automatically updates the host file in host application.

I'm certain that Cakewalk used .TMP files to achieve this
but I'm unsure about Calibre's file handling.

I envisage things as follows :

1 : A dedicated section in Calibre Preferences to choose favourite
image editor location.

2 : A tab on the right-click menu in Calibre saying 'Edit Image
in External Program'.

I hope and pray that someone somewhere can be inspired to
build such an application, because, let's face it ;

Editing images is a pain in the butt and anything that can make
it any easier can only be a good thing, right ?

I'm welcoming any feedback, even
explanations of why it's impossible to do ! :

Thanks for your time and trouble to read this,

Peace & Love,

Gord.

You can already U(npack) any EPUB in Calibre: Explode: <edit whatever you select with the system tools>: Rebuild

You are not limited to just using Calibre.

No matter what tool that is built in, there are folk that hate it.
Using the Unpack method, the hate must be directed inward

I guess I don't understand the problem, because such a function exists after all.

Not quite sure why you want to add something that is already there. I have calibre's ebook-editor and right click on the cover image in Details set to use paint.NET or GIMP to open. If I click on an image found using the Open book folder, a right click gets me the full selection of image editing programs installed on Windows.

Right click on an image in either of the those two locations and edit the open with applications list.

Got it !

I guess I should have delved a bit deeper into the manual !

Many thanks for your replies and help,
quite liked the bit about things exploding.

Cheers,

That's one issue with calibre being basically a Swiss army knife app. There are so many features and alternate ways of accessing them, that it can be a pain trying to actually find and use them.

Much like the comment about Microsoft Word that "the average user only uses 15% of the features. Sadly, almost every user uses a different 15%".

Also, you only really need 5 functions (which EVERYBODY uses):
  • Open
  • Close
  • Cut
  • Paste
  • Save
The remaining functions are just decoration.
