Which version of calibre works with libc 2.28?

The version of calibre that comes with Debian Buster 10 is an antique. I want to install jhowell's KFX plugin but it said I need a newer version. I downloaded the newest version but my sysadmin said it won't install because my libc isn't new enough. The advice was "upgrade your system" but he can't do that until higher-ups certify security.

Is it new enough to load jhowell's KFX plugin?

Perhaps you could try the install from the calibre-ebook website? From too many reports in these forums, using a distro supplied calibre is, for the most part, a short path to pain.

No idea try the latest minor release in every major release series one by one till you find one that runs.

Not being an expert but... Debian buster does support Flatpak. Could you install Flatpak and use the version of Calibre from its repository?

Flatpak isn't a good idea.

I agree that this is the best idea for installing calibre.

I would start with https://download.calibre-ebook.com/4.23.0/

Using the wayback archive the last version of calibre that used glibc 2.18 is calibre release (5.44.0).

https://download.calibre-ebook.com/5.44.0/

edit
Wayback calibre linux page from 7-05-2022 showing dependencies.

It's also maybe the last time there was a 32 bit version?

Yes calibre 5.44.0 was the last 32bit version.

calibre 6.0.0 required glibc 2.31 or higher.

Given that Debian Buster has been out of support since August, 2022, anyone who is worried about security should be thinking about updating to a supported version. Even if you are using Debian LTS support, you are out of support on 30-Jun-2024. Perhaps testing some Debian 12.5 Bookworm installs would be a good idea?
