Quote:
Lucy Watson was just an ordinary girl. Or was she…?

She had lived in the same ordinary house on the same ordinary street with her mother for most of her life.

But then she met him.

And suddenly, she vanished.

Though not without a trace.

Leaving letters and messages, hints that she was all right, Lucy’s life remained a mystery to those closest to her.

But it wasn’t long before the messages stopped and she disappeared completely…

After three years of no contact, Inspector Henry Beaumont makes it his personal mission to find her.

In a house on the edge of a tract of ancient woodland, close to the village of Nine Maidens, he becomes involved with a mysterious family.

However, Inspector Beaumont soon realises that this is far more than a simple missing persons case.

Secrets begin to surface and he soon discovers an age-old earth magic that could hold the answer to Lucy’s disappearance.

By The North Door is a thrilling read that will keep you guessing with each page turn.

I routinely have more interest in the items on sale in England than those on sale in the US!

Me too, and I also love that UK thing where the most recent book in a series will go on sale for £0.99 for one day, quite soon after it's published, sometimes even before it's on sale in the US. I can't count how many recent books I've picked up that way. And often matched at Kobo UK, or if not, you can do the Kobo price match thing if you don't mind the hassle...

The Rose Arbor by Rhys Bowen is a non-series historical mystery. It's £0.99 at Kindle UK right now. It's KU, though, so won't be available/matched at Kobo UK.

Spoiler:
Quote:
An investigation into a girl’s disappearance uncovers a mystery dating back to World War II in a haunting novel of suspense by the bestselling author of The Venice Sketchbook and The Paris Assignment.

London: 1968. Liz Houghton is languishing as an obituary writer at a London newspaper when a young girl’s disappearance captivates the city. If Liz can break the story, it’s her way into the newsroom. She already has a scoop: her best friend, Marisa, is a police officer assigned to the case.

Liz follows Marisa to Dorset, where they make another disturbing discovery. Over two decades earlier, three girls disappeared while evacuating from London. One was found murdered in the woods near a train line. The other two were never seen again.

As Liz digs deeper, she finds herself drawn to the village of Tydeham, which was requisitioned by the military during the war and left in ruins. After all these years, what could possibly link the missing girls to this abandoned village? And why does a place Liz has never seen before seem so strangely familiar?

A Murder on the Appian Way is the fifth in Steven Saylor's Gordianus series. It doesn't go on sale very often, so even though £2.99 isn't a great price for decades-old backlist, here you go...

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007JKEVAE
Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/a-m...e-appian-way-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
52 BC, and Rome is in turmoil. Rival gangs prowl the streets as Publius Clodius, a high-born populist politician, and his arch-enemy Titus Milo fight to control the consular elections. But when Clodius is murdered on the famed Appian Way and Milo is accused of the crime, the city explodes with riots and arson.

As accusations and rumours fly, Gordianus is charged by Pompey the Great with discovering what really happened on the Appian Way that dark January night. Was it murder? And if so, should the perpetrator be condemned as a villain - or hailed as the saviour of the Roman Republic? For on the truth of that hangs the fate of Titus Milo . . .

I luckily picked several of these up back in Fictionwise days, since I haven't seen any of these on sale in years. This is a really nice six-book series that I wish were longer.
