Well lol using the xrandr thingy and then executing in the terminal "mate-display-properties" (without the quotes) may make the system more usable.

Another thing that could be done is right clicking into the panel (tricky, tho, you must move something (an icon, for example) out of the way to make space for the click) and getting into the panel properties and then reducing the icon size (the default is 36px a damn lot, I'd recommend 16-24px)
