The Sony Readers display the PDF metadata for the titles and authors (and pretty much ignore the filename). There are a number of apps and utilities you can use to edit this information. If you have Acrobat Professional (not sure if this works in the free Reader), you can bring up the Properties box (File > Properties) and edit them there (be sure to save afterwards). Alternately, as Boston says, Calibre can do it, too. Finally, a quick Google search brought me to this thread, where =X= points out a metadata editor that he's had success with. Lots of options, but unfortunately they all involve using some sort of tool.
