I am retired and access my Kobo Glo many times throughout the day. I would assume that powering up 8+ times would be more of a drain than coming out of sleep on a daily basis. I power off at the end of my day and then power up once the next day on first access. In my opinion I don't consider getting 3 weeks out of one charge "very poor" if you read more than 30 mins a day or do frequent power off/on's.
I believe that most of the manufacture claims of duration between battery charges have a daily reading time cap or so many page turns per charge and that this will decrease as the battery wears down.
