You don't add books to columns, you add DATA

Depending on your settings for the Metadata editor, the location of you columns data entry box will vary. In bulk mode, custom columns are on a separate tab

Double click (or F2) in the field in library view, will allow data to be typed/pasted there (just like any other field)

Some plugins can write to custom columns...Thos PI will need to be configured to use the column
