Perhaps the recomendation should be to forget the USB cable approach altogether.
( I know it may be necessary for some development purposes, but The SD approach
is better for the average user. For that, the USB cable is unnecessary.)

All the the functions that most users will ever need, including firmware updates,
can be properly done using the SD card. It is easy and inexpensive to add a USB 2
based media card reading device to a PC or Mac. There are plenty of pocket SD card
readers, for under $5. Most Netbooks come with media ports built-in, that can read &
write to SD cards.
