Mary Ann (or Marian) Evans (1819-1880) was an editor, translator, and novelist who wrote under the name of George Eliot for all but one of her books.
The
Brother Jacob short story was published in 1864. It shows the author at her most sardonic, and has an upleasant confectioner as the main character.
