Hauptfigur dieses umfangreichen historischen Romans ist der gleichnamige Hochmeister des Deutschen Ordens, der auch von Eichendorff zum Protagonisten eines Dramas gemacht worden war (»Der letzte Held von Marienburg«).
In seinem Memoirenwerk "Richter und Dichter" finden sich (Seite 205f.) Bemerkungen Ernst Wicherts, wie er zu dem Stoff kam und was ihn politisch daran interessierte.
