Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920) is considered one of the greatest Spanish novelists. He is best known for his novels depicting the Spanish society of his time, and for the series of historical novel on the Spanish 19th century, "Episodios Nacionales".
"Tristana" is a short novel that tells the story of young orphan woman (the title character) who has a rather secluded life with her foster father, but at some point she meets a man and starts developing a personality of her own with somewhat modern (for the time) views on the role of women and marriage, views that clash with the surrounding society.
