Yes, that's correct. You certainly can't assume that, simply because something is in the public domain in the US, it's also in the public domain in the UK (and vice versa, of course).
All works
originally published in the US prior to 1923 are also in the UK public domain, but that doesn't apply to works originally published elsewhere.
