Wanted—A King
OR
How Merle Set the Nursery Rhymes to Rights

by Maggie Browne
Pseudonym of Margaret Hamer Andrewes (1864–1937)
Illustrated by Harry Furniss (1854–1925)

Merle, confined to bed to recover from a serious fall, finds herself in the land of Endom. The nursery rhyme characters who live there ask her help to vanquish and banish the wicked Grunter Grim, who has subverted the happy verses into very unpleasant experiences. This will not be an easy task for Merle, but she is determined to succeed.

Maggie Browne, pseudonym of Margaret Andrewes née Hamer (1864-1937), was an English author of fiction and non-fiction children’s books, who is best known today for Wanted, a King, an Alice in Wonderland-type story. Lewis Carroll reportedly owned a copy “as part of his collection of ‘books of the Alice type’.”

Some of her other titles include Pleasant Work for Busy Fingers; Plays for Little Folks; Two Old Ladies, Two Foolish Fairies, and a Tom Cat; and The Book of Betty Barber.
(The latter two, illustrated by Arthur Rackham, are also available from the MobileRead library.

Wanted—A King was first published in 1890. This book is in the public domain where copyright is “Life+80” or less, and in the USA.

A fun little book that can be enjoyed straight-up by young readers, and by adults as a glimpse of some early challenges to social and gender roles.
