Sorry, the Kobo ereaders have never read the series information or any other calibre metadata attribute.. The series info can display it, but it has to come from somewhere else. The series info can be populated by the driver. Each time you connect a Kobo device, it checks the series info and updates it. There is an option in the KoboTouch driver to enable this.

For the title and author, they come from "dc:title" attribute and the first "dc:creator" attribute. If you were seeing the sort versions of the author or title, then you were probably using a metadata plugin to change these values.

If you have swapped between the built-in KoboTouch driver and the extended driver, you need to check the configuration as these options are not shared.
