One series I'd recommend is "Star Trek: New Frontier." It is set in the time of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" but has the feel of the Original Series. Although various characters from the other series make an appearance (and some are regulars in this series), this book series goes in its own direction while still be part of the Star Trek universe.
