There is NO benefit to knowing where Kobo Desktop stores the books; they are DRM protected and as of yet, no one has broken the DRM.

For what it's worth, in my case they are in
C:\Users\Peter\AppData\Local\Kobo\Kobo Desktop Edition\kepub

If you want books you can use outside of Kobo Desktop, you have to go to the KoboBooks.com website, head to My Library and then download (via the blue button along side each book) the ePub. This will actually download an ACSM file that when opened by Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) download a DRM'ed ePub.
