Updating cross-links in Word is fairly easy. First in the main text, Ctrl-A (Select All) and hit F9. If there are tables (such as table of contents) it will ask if you want to update entire tables or just page numbers. Then place the cursor in any footnote/endnote. Since I used cross-links to refer to real footnotes (which I hid as described before in the Word primary text), and cross-link numbering does not automatically update, you must do this manually. Ctrl-A in the footnotes (Select All for the references) and press F9. Word will warn you that your action cannot be undone. Accept that, and all the cross-links will correctly update throughout the footnotes.

BTW, cross-references are clickable in my version of Word.

And yes, some of the footnotes are almost separate chapters. And until the book can be professionally edited, they will remain long, complex footnotes. Using EPUB and what I have learned in this thread will allow me to separate primary and secondary footnotes (endnotes), and hopefully on the printed page as well.

Thanks to all for your assistance and observations.
